He had gotten caught up in a cult. His family engaged to have him “rescued”. As he was reintegrated back into family and community his counselor suggested to him that he take a break from it all, to find himself. He sure did. That was years ago and he is still taking a break from God!
How do we all take a break from Higher Power? We do it in so many ways: skipping church to engage in late morning snuggles, or to go fishing, or to go do anything else but be in church where Higher Power is to be found. At least that is the idea that many people have that Higher Power is only contained in church or synagogue or chapel or temple.
It is incomplete to believe that Higher Power is only contained in buildings, sacred or otherwise. Spirit goes wherever you go. It is who you are. Any place, anytime, anywhere you go, there goes Spirit.
You cannot run far enough to escape the truth that were you go; goes God. It does not matter how much pain you carry, how much you want to feel separate, that God does not also go. Especially when you feel God has left you, even then you are never alone, especially then!
It is in our beliefs about ourselves that we create separation. This is part of the emotional pain that we experienced, often when we were very small. We carry it fully into adult hood where it cycles over and over again in our lives.
These beliefs are not true about us. There is no law in any land that says that because I was sexually abused by an alcoholic parent, …that says because of that experience I must take on the belief that I am broken, unlovable, ruined, tainted, damaged, soiled and separate from everyone including God. That I am too soiled for God and She would never want me because of that.
Other individuals have different experiences where they also created their own beliefs about themselves, including bullying, betrayal, abandonment, depression, there are so many who hurt. It is only in our individual beliefs that we are separate and that can never be the truth.
Next time you are tempted to forgo Church, just remember God skips out with you.
